Introduction
Welcome to the exciting path towards becoming a Certified Document Technologist! This milestone is a testament to your dedication and expertise in construction projects.
Construction Administration
Construction administration involves many methods, depending on the design, construction, and procurement activities. CSI offers certifications in construction administration, document technologist, and as a construction specifier. Prerequisites are required.
Exam Preparation
Familiarize yourself with the CSI Project Delivery Practice Guide (current edition), MasterFormat, UniFormat, Section and PageFormat, and consider study groups or paid course training. Documents may be purchased via CSI’s website (https://www.csiresources.org/certification/ccs/ccs-source-materials).
Review the CDT handbook for certification of candidates for complete details and requirements. This includes architectural (AIA Document A201) and engineering conditions of contract (EJCDC C-700) and standard agreements (AIA A101, EJCDC C-520).

- Suggested Study Option A: Read all material and highlight.
- Suggested Study Option B: Seek out the ‘exam content outline’ in the CDT handbook and use this as the basis for referencing the study material.
Exam Format
There are exam windows to register within. CSI memberships may have lower fees or other advantages. In-person at a designated testing location or remote exams (with specific environment requirements) are usually available. No reference material or notes are allowed during the exam (closed-book). Typically, exams have been 120 multiple-choice questions and two-hours, with one ten-minute break.
Potentially Re-taking the Exam
Results are typically 6-8 weeks. Review the results paperwork and strategize more training. Schedule and pay for retesting in the next exam window. Examinations are not necessarily a test of your knowledge, but keep practicing and you will achieve your goal of passing.
After Passing the Exam
CSI allows use of CDT designation, so long as it stays renewed. CSI members also may display CSI in their title designation. Consider the CCS exam next.
Continuing Education
Staying up-to-date with your continuing education is crucial for maintaining your CSI certification.
